The Fifth Nakshatra: Mrigashira

The fifth of the 27 Nakshatras is Mrigashira,                                                                       which spans from 23°20′ Taurus/VrishabhaOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA to 6°40′ Gemini/Mithuna in the sidereal zodiac. Mrigashira मृगशिर means deer-head, which is also a symbol of the Moon. This Nakshatra is also called other names, which reinforce its intimate connection to the Moon: Chandra and Udupa (the Moon), Soumya (auspicious like Soma, the Moon), and Agrahayani (day of the full moon). The Moon reflects the light of the Sun, the eternal soul, in each individual’s mind/psyche.

Fittingly, Mrigashira’s ruling deity is Soma, the Moon, and it’s ruling planet is Mars. Under the influence of Mrigashira, the mind (including emotions and the unconscious realm) is ready to search, take action, be inquisitive, and learn about life and the world, and for some to raise their level of consciousness. The Taurus/Venus influence would incline one to be more creative, sensual, and drawn to earthly pleasures, whereas the Gemini/Mercury influence would lead one towards more intellectual activities and pursuits.

Despite the active energy of Mars, Mrigashira’s Guna is strongly tamasic, which could lead to the possibility of getting lost in pleasure seeking, being materialistic, having periods of laziness or depression (which likely fluctuate according to the cycles of the Moon) becoming overly analytical, or nowadays escaping into technology (online personas, games, etc.). However, it’s main motivation is towards Moksha, though it will be through experiencing and learning from the challenges presented by the mind and emotions that will steer one’s soul towards liberation.
