The eleventh of the 27 Nakshatras is Purva Phalguni, which spans from 13°20′ to 26°40′ in Leo/Simha in the Sidereal Zodiac. Purva, पूर्व, means the former or early, and Phalguni, फाल्गुनी, is that which gives fruit or fulfills our wishes and desires. Purva Phalguni is the first half of a constellation in the shape of a bed. Uttara Phalguni, which is the twelfth Nakshatra, is the other half.
Purva Phalguni’s ruling planet is Venus, and being entirely in Leo, there is also great influence from the Sun, Leo’s ruling planet. Venus is about desire, pleasures, creation, and bearing fruit or children. Leo is a very creative and romantic sign, and the Sun brings success, abundance, and happiness. The symbols for this Nakshatra are a bed or a fireplace. Creative expression is important for those with natal Moon here so that they can grow, flourish, and be productive and successful.
Purva Phalguni is a very auspicious Lunar Mansion. It’s ruling deities are Bhaga, god of wealth and luck, and Aryaman, bestower of prosperity, victories, and friendships. The main motivation, or Purushaartha, is kama – desire and passion. The dominant Guna is tamas, and those under its influence seek abundance, material wealth, and/or excessive self-destruction. Which way one goes depends partly on other influences in one’s birth chart and partly on free will, the choices one makes on their personal journey.
