The Seventeenth Nakshatra: Anuradha

water-lilyThe seventeenth of the 27 Nakshatras is Anuradha, which spans from 3°20′ to 16°40′ in Scorpio/Vrishchika in the Sidereal Zodiac. Anuradha, अनुराध, is nearly identical to anuradha, अनूराध, which means causing happiness. The symbol for this Nakshatra is the lotus flower, whose beauty rises out of stagnant and murky waters towards the Sun to bask blissfully in its light. After the flowering process, the lotus returns to the muddy depths to begin the process again. This symbolizes the soul that is concealed in physical matter (the muddy, murky waters), yet continually strives, through many rebirths, for union/yoga with the divine Source. Happiness comes when we understand that we are already yoked with the Divine.

Anuradha is ruled by Saturn, who is strict, purposeful, and patient in teaching us our karmic lessons. Scorpio however is ruled by Mars, who on the one hand gives courage and endurance to face karmic challenges, but who on the other hand is impulsive and unhappy with restrictions. If the Martian energy is channelled towards the spiritual path, happiness will blossom.

The ruling deity for Anuradha is Mitra, a god of light associated with the Sun, specifically dawn and daylight. Mitra means friend, and in Buddhism it is the term for a type of teacher called a spiritual friend. Through Mitra’s influence and light, those with natal Moon in this Nakshatra are likely to be great friends, to see the possibilities of new beginnings (dawns), and to live in service or on the path of divine love.

Anuradha’s main motivation, or Purusaartha, is towards Dharma, righteous action, which reinforces the path of service and divine love. The Guna qualities are both sattvic and tamasic, which can reflect the conflicting qualities of Saturn and Mars, but may also make one struggle between a harmonic and righteous life and a materialistic and inert life.

  1. “If the Martian energy is channelled towards the spiritual path, happiness will blossom.”… I so hope so… .. Loved reading… 🙂

  2. that was very insightful and detailed – interesting to note, I was drawn to the Lotus today, specifically in reverence to one of the deities I work with (Kuan Yin), so this came as a timely post – have a wonderful day!
