The eagle has been coming up a lot for me lately when I pull my daily Earth Magic Oracle Card. I’ve also recently become captivated by a powerful Saami song by Mari Boine called Eagle Brother. (A video of it is at end of this post.) The Saami are the native people and reindeer herders from the Arctic regions of Scandinavia and Western Russia. Though they are sometimes called People of the Bear (the Greek word ἄρκτος, arktos, means “bear”), they have a Shamanic culture and are intimately connected to nature spirits and animal spirits in general, including the powerful eagle.
Eagles are very large birds, having wingspans up to 8 feet long. They are keen sighted, swift, opportunistic, and smart. They hunt with skill and determination, and have a commanding and authoritative presence. The powerful beating of their massive and strong wings is thought by many native cultures to bring cleaning, healing, and revitalizing rains. Interestingly I have been having many dreams lately with themes of water, cleansing, and purging.
The eagle’s sharp vision is deeply symbolic of it’s insight, intuition, wisdom, knowledge of magic and spiritual truths, even divination. Its ability to soar high allows the eagle to see above the physical realm as well as see the bigger picture from the perspective of Spirit. Like most birds, the eagle is also a messenger of Spirit and a guide of souls (psychopomp) from the earthly to the spirit realm.
The Eagle represents:
- Strength, Power, Authority, and Skill
- Keen Vision, Insight, and Focus
- Seeing the Universal Picture
- Wisdom and Spiritual Knowledge
- Cleansing and Healing
- Guides for Souls and Messengers of Spirit
