The Turning of the Wheel of Time

spirit_winterI chose this day, December 21st, 2014, to participate in Linda Litebeing’s 2014 Wrap-Up Blog Challenge: What were the gifts of 2014? because today is the Winter Solstice here in the Northern Hemisphere, the day that the Sun stands still, and an astronomical new year. This quiet, shortest, and darkest day of the year is an opportunity for us to reflect upon the past year as well as look ahead and envision what we wish for in the coming year. The turning of the wheel of time has paused for a moment of silence before a new cycle begins. But today is also a rare occurrence: both the Sun and the Moon are beginning their new cycles entering Capricorn within 2.5 hours of each other. This will be a grand new year!

Thank you Linda for your invitation to this lovely 2014 Wrap-up! My reflections:

foolWhich lessons did you learn? I have come to a much clearer, deeper, and profound understanding of my Neptunian boundaries, or rather the tendency for the lack thereof. It’s a regular focus or meditation that I need to check on regularly, else I allow others to trample on me. But in truth it is I who has disrespected my own boundaries.

How did you serve others? There are many answers to this question. WheelA new act of service that began this past year was having one of my Alaskan Malamute pups become an animal assisted therapy pup. You can read some of here ponderings here

What blessings did you receive? The greatest blessing I received in 2014 was the completion of a life-long process of healing. It required much work in delving into my own shadows and releasing grips from Worldmy psyche. I was blessed with a rebirth like a butterfly coming out of its cocoon.

Was there something you lost that turned out to be a blessing in disguise? The greatest blessing mentioned above is the blessing in disguise. An event that occurred that brought about completion would not be thought of as a blessing to most, yet it was a great gift to me.

Did you receive any “gifts” in terms of powers or skills? Rebirth and Clarity.

WinterSolsticeHappy Solstice and Happy New Year!

The next post in the 2014 Wrap-up is over at Tania Marie’s blog.

Animal Spirits: The Reindeer

reindeerIn the comments of the post Animal Spirits: The Deer, Jeff of Stuff Jeff Reads reminded me of the flying reindeer and its symbolic connection to the dreamworld, psyche, and astral traveling. ‘Tis the season for these beautiful and swift-running wild animals to do their annual long journey around the globe, and so let’s dash away into the symbolism of the reindeer!

Mongolian Shaman Reindeer Stone

Reindeer are very tough creatures. They live often in harsh, cold environments and travel up to a few thousand miles exploring vast terrains as they search for food. They are sturdy and very sure-footed, which helps them to navigate and guide themselves across such large and often frozen landscapes.

Possibly because of their fast-moving and long-distance travel abilities, the reindeer, similarly to birds, are considered spirit guides for souls as they travel from the physical realm to the spirit realm. Shamans, especially those in Siberia, Mongolia, and the Sami of Arctic Scandinavia, had a close connection to the flying reindeer as spirit guides for soul journeying, mind-traveling, astral traveling, and spiritual transformation.

As carriers and guides for souls, flying reindeer travel in and to the hidden realms (the spirit world, the unconscious, in darkness, and at night), and the deer’s connection to the moon symbolically connects the reindeer further to the unconscious, the dreamworld, and the psyche and soul.

Odin by Georg von Rosen

Odin by Georg von Rosen

The god Wodan or Odin in traditional Germanic and Scandinavian cultures is believed to be one of the precursors for the modern day Santa Claus. Odin was a shaman, seer, and poet who rode an eight-legged horse, Sleipnir, who could take Odin to Hel (the underworld) and back, that is, travel between realms. Today the eight reindeer of Santa’s sleigh have replaced the eight legs of Sleipnir.

Reindeer are associated with shamanism and mysticism. May they bring miraculous joy to everyone this holiday season!

The Reindeer symbolize:

  • Swiftness
  • Sturdiness & Survival
  • Travel & Journeying (physical, mental, astral, shamanic)
  • Psychopomps & Soul Guides
  • Shamanism

The Buddhist Teaching Hidden Under the Robe of the Ghost of Christmas Present

XmasGhostMost know or have at least heard of the story of Ebenezer Scrooge in Charles Dickens’ novel, A Christmas Carol. In the story Scrooge learned through a night of nightmares (or time travel) and self-reflection that being greedy and miserly only brought him a life of loneliness and misery. When he awoke Christmas morning, he chose to begin living life by being kind, loving, and generous to those in his life and community. We could say that he embraced the meaning of Christmas, and that the main message in the story is one of Christian Love.

Embedded within this story, as with many great novels and literature, are other messages. Hidden under the robe of the ghost of Christmas present is a message that is taught across world religions and philosophies, though probably best known as a Buddhist teaching. Under his giant robe the ghost of Christmas present reveals to Scrooge “the banes of man”: Ignorance and Want. These banes of man, the things which cause and contribute to our suffering, are two of the three roots of disease and suffering in Tibetan Buddhist Medicine.

We can choose to live a life through ignorance: illusion, delusion, and lack of self-awareness and of compassion for others; and through want: attachment, clinging, craving, and possessing. Or we can, like Ebenezer Scrooge, choose to awaken today free from the fetters that our own egos have put upon us, open our hearts, and live a life of kindness, love, and compassion. Like the Grinch, when he realized Christmas was not about the superficial decorations and feasting, nor about the shopping and the presents, so too can we expand from the fetters of ignorance and desire (and anger), and let our hearts grow more and more each and every day!

The Name of God

Julianne Victoria's avatarBlazing Light of Glory

vibrationsThe next section of lessons from A Course In Miracles since our last review (lessons 171-180) often mentions and talks about the Name of God: Lesson 183: I Call Upon God’s Name And On My Own, and Lesson 184: The Name Of God Is My Inheritance. In my post The Word and Voice of GodI discussed: “When we become quiet and still, when our minds stop chattering about our grievances and fears, our souls within our bodies will “hear” the divine vibration of God’s word and voice; and as we become full of nothing (see this post), we free ourselves to be empty vessels ready and willing to be filled with the reverberating echoes of the voice of God.” But, what is the Name of God?

From Lesson 183: And should you join a brother as you sit in silence, and repeat God’s Name along…

Animal Spirits: The Deer

DeerThese past few days I’ve come across deer mentioned in several posts and articles I’ve read. Deer are swift, graceful, beautiful, and gentle creatures. They are sacred to the goddess Artemis (Diana), the goddess of nature, animals, wilderness, childbirth, and the Moon (mother). Similarly deer symbolize fertility, creativity, and abundance. Deer are also watchful and resourceful, knowing what is necessary for survival and how to find fresh greens. However, they seem to exist from a place of gratitude with their deep understanding of Nature.

Thinking about the deer has reminded me about a dream I had just about three years ago exactly.

I was with my boyfriend at the time, and we were scuba diving in the Antarctic. I had taken many pictures underwater and was excited to look at them later. When we surfaced and were about to get back onto the boat, I realized that the film had fallen out of the camera. I wanted to go back and get it, but my boyfriend said we had to let it go and that I always had my memories for pictures. I felt disappointed but agreed. Still in the water I turned to look back (maybe for one last glimpse for memory’s sake) and just then I saw deer swimming by.

DeerSwimThough I immediately understood the messages of this dream when I awoke, I was baffled by the deer swimming by. It was a surprise to me both in the unconscious and conscious mind. Why were deer swimming in the freezing Antarctic waters? What were they telling me? This was the first time I had ever heard of/seen/known of deer swimming. Interestingly and more surprisingly, maybe a couple of weeks later, I received an email about a story about a boat that rescued some deer swimming miles out to sea in freezing waters. Or, more accurately, these deer swam to the boat and asked to be let on board. The boaters has no idea why the deer were out there.

I hadn’t thought about this dream and experience in a while and had worked out some of the deer meaning. But since this has come up again, maybe there is more to the message of the deer. If any Jungians, dream-lovers, and symbolists out there have any ideas, I’d love to hear from you.

DeerBridgeWith their woodland wisdom and resourcefulness, deer, like in my dream experience above, are known to take alternative paths to reach a goal. A few months ago, a couple of deer decided that the easiest way to get to the woodlands in Marin, north of San Francisco, was to cross the Golden Gate Bridge. Though it happened to be evening rush hour, people graciously let the deer cross the bridge safely. These deer were very wise not to swim across, since the waters of the bay are freezing and dangerously choppy.

Besides the deer’s connection to Artemis, a Moon goddess, in Vedic Astrology the deer is a symbol for the Moon as represented with the fifth Nakshatra: Mrigashira. The Moon symbolizes mother, nurturing, emotions, the unconscious, and the psyche, and perhaps deer too have a deep connection to the soul (psyche) and the unconscious realm (dreams).

The Deer symbolizes:

  • Beauty, Grace, Love, & Gentleness
  • Fertility, Creativity, & Abundance
  • Being Watchful & Resourceful
  • Swiftness
  • Gratitude
  • Nature Wisdom
  • The Moon

Forgiveness & Gratitude Are the Way to Peace

Julianne Victoria's avatarBlazing Light of Glory

TwainAs Lisa and I approach another review section (Lessons 171-180), the lessons of The Course continue to get longer and deeper, and as mentioned in this post: “At the same time the lessons are repeating like an expanding fractal. This forces us to go deeper and deeper into our minds to clear out the layers upon layers of illusions and beliefs that cloud the true vision of our Inner Selves.” One of the greatest lessons that The Course is teaching is that forgiveness and gratitude are the way to peace and salvation. To this I’d like to add that forgiveness and gratitude go hand-in-hand.

From Lesson 169: Forgiveness is the central theme that runs throughout salvationFirstly we need to understand that salvation can only come from within. Nobody outside of our True Self can free us from the sufferings, attachments, and grievances of our ego mind. We, the children…

शिव सूत्र २, ३, ४: Shiva Sutras Section 1, Sutra 2, 3, & 4

Shivaya3ज्ञानं  बन्ध: ।।२।।

Jnaanam bandhah

2. (Limited) Knowledge is bondage.

योनिवर्ग: कलाशरीरम् ।।३।।

Yonivargah kalaashariiram

The Source (Womb) + class/group (i.e. the physical realm of Maya) + the body/form + ignorance/a moment in time. (Kalaa also means menstrual discharge, which goes with the symbolism of Yoni, womb.)

3. The Source (of bondage) is Maya (illusion) whose form is ignorance (time).

ज्ञानाधिष्ठानं मातृका ।।४।।

Jnaanaadhishthaanam maatrkaa

4. The limited knowledge basis is in words. (Maatrkaa means the Divine Mother and the alphabet, or the sounds or vibrations that produce the Universe. Here in the physical world, where the energetic power of sounds, words, or language is not fully understood, it binds us to limited knowledge). See related post here.

What Is A Miracle?

Julianne Victoria's avatarBlazing Light of Glory

bluebirdsInstead of looking at specific lessons or lesson themes, I thought it would be a good idea to take a look at what exactly a miracle is. Generally most of us might describe a miracle as something that can’t be explained by everyday understanding nor by the scientific knowledge that we have to date. In Medieval or Church Latin, a miracle or miraculous is defined as a “marvelous event caused by God”. These are miracles such as Moses parting the Red Sea or Jesus walking on water.

In A Course in Miracles, however, they are not talking about these kinds of miracles. The Course even discourages thinking of miracles as magic. In Text Chapter 1, The Meaning of Miracles, Part I. Principles of Miracles it states in #10: The use of miracles as spectacles to induce belief is a misunderstanding of their purpose. Instead this first section of the book…
