The Number Fourteen

mooncyclesWriting the post, The Fourteen Names of the Goddessgot me pondering about the number fourteen. With my focus of this dream message having been on the goddesses, especially Moon- and Mother-goddesses, I had not thought about the symbolism and meaning of the number fourteen. So I did a little research, but the two meanings that stuck out for me are the two that I had intuitively thought of already: the cycles of the Moon and her symbolism, and the Temperance card of the Tarot.

In a Lunar Month, the period from one New Moon to the next New Moon, the Moon has a waxing cycle of ~14 days until it becomes full, and then a waning cycle of ~14 days until it is new again. The waxing phase is a period of growth, and the waning phase is a period for reflecting on that growth. These two phases symbolize the harmony and balance that is necessary between work and rest, between expressing outwardly and self-reflecting inwardly. The Moon is connected to the unconscious realm, intuition, and dreams. During the darkening time of the Moon, we have a greater opportunity to delve deep within, exploring and learning from the depths of our souls, so that we can bring new awareness to light and into our conscious world during the enlightening time of the Moon.

Temperance – The Goddess Ganga from my new Sacred India Tarot

The Temperance card of the Tarot is the fourteenth card of the Major Arcana or Trump cards. This card is a card of alchemy, of bringing together two very different things, like fire and water, and harmoniously creating something new, unexpected, even magical. It’s also about transforming what is unpleasant, base, or unwanted into something beautiful, golden, and wonderful. As with all transformation, Temperance also indicates patience.

It was only after I decided to write about the number fourteen that I remembered that the Temperance card came up in this week’s Weekly Oracle Card Reading. Subscribe to my YouTube channel, click here.

The Fourteen Names of the Goddess

moon_goddess

Art by Josephine Wall

On the morning of December 29th, 2013 I made this very short entry in my dream journal: I needed to know the fourteen names of the Goddess. It wasn’t a voice that told me this like in this dream; it was just a feeling that I needed to know this, and it remained with me when I woke up. I can’t remember now if it was later that day or in the following days that, as I was going through some of my post-it notes for post ideas, I came across a list I had previously made of goddesses (and gods) of the Moon or the cycles of Nature. To my surprise there were 14! This was my pre-dream list:

  1. Hecate – Greek goddess of the Moon, sorcery, and crossroads.
  2. Cailleach – Celtic goddess of winter, known as a hag or veiled one, sometimes the crone aspect of Brigid.
  3. Brigid – Celtic goddess of spring, the hearth, and medicine.
  4. Demeter/Ceres – Greek/Roman goddess of grains, fertility, and the cycle of life.
  5. Persephone – Demeter’s daughter and goddess of vegetation and spring.
  6. Selene – Greek goddess of the Moon.
  7. Luna – Roman goddess of the Moon, sometimes part of a triple goddess with Hecate and Persephone.
  8. Artemis/Diana – Greek/Roman goddess of wild animals, hunting, childbirth, virginity, and the Moon. She is the twin sister of Apollo, god of the Sun.
  9. Mani – Norse god of the Moon.
  10. Chandra – Hindu god of the Moon.
  11. Phoebe – Greek Titan goddess of the Moon, associated with Selene, grandmother of Artemis, Apollo, and Hecate, and oracle of prophesy.
  12. Kali – Hindu goddess of power, time, change, and death.
  13. Lilith – Though called a demon, not a goddess, in Jewish mythology she represents the dark feminine, darkness, and the night. In astrology she is called Black Moon Lilith.
  14. Black Madonna – Mary the mother of Jesus. Though originally there are likely cultural reasons for her being black, I had put her on my list as a representation of the feminine (dark vs. masculine-light) and divine mother.

At the time that I had both made this pre-dream list and subsequently received the dream message that I needed to know the fourteen names of the Goddess, I was deep into healing my psyche, my mother-wounds, ancestral karma, and emotions tucked away and lost long ago in the far reaches of my unconscious. I created a new list for the fourteen names of the goddess as my dream message told me. These fourteen names of the goddess are aspects that I needed to acknowledge and integrate into my being as a whole as part of my healing process. They are also aspects of the divine feminine that inspire me and guide me in my life. These fourteen feminine guides are:

  1. Saraswati – Hindu goddess of writing, knowledge, language, and creativity.
  2. Tara – Hindu goddess of wisdom, the Star. Buddhist goddess of compassion and liberation. Celtic mother goddess.
  3. Seshat – Egyptian goddess of language and wisdom.
  4. Kali – Hindu goddess of power, time, change, and death.
  5. Sophia – Greek and Gnostic goddess of sacred wisdom.
  6. Black Madonna – Divine Mother.
  7. Venus – Roman goddess of love and beauty.
  8. Lilith – Awareness of the shadow and dark feminine.
  9. Brigid & Cailleach / Hecate, Demeter, & Persephone – The cycles of the seasons, nature, and life & death.
  10. Freya – Norse goddess of beauty, death, and sorcery/shamanism.
  11. Quan Yin – Buddhist goddess of compassion.
  12. Mary Magdalene – She represents devotion and teaching to me.
  13. Selene/Luna – Goddess of the Moon (intuition, light, emotions, and mother).
  14. Artemis/Diana – Goddess of the Moon, animals, and nature.

These fourteen names of the goddess, or more what they represent and symbolize, are my reminders and inspiration as I continue to heal, grow, and shine for others.

Animal Spirits: The Hummingbird

images-1Though I wrote about the hummingbird about a year and a half ago, tucked into the post on The Raven/Crow, I’ve recently had some amazing encounters and feel the hummingbird deserves a post of her own. Whenever a hummingbird visits me, hovering for a minute or two in front of me, I’ve always sensed that it is one of my guardian angels, usually my grandmother, telling me that she is there and all is well. Yesterday, while hiking around Golden Gate Park with my pups, I had a very beautiful encounter.

We were near the end of a two hour hike in the park and about to walk over the beach to take in the ocean when a hummingbird stopped in front of us and danced around for a few minutes. She came closer and closer, showing us her different colors that reflect when the light hits her feathers at certain angles. And then a second hummingbird came over and they performed a dance together for another minute. I felt very honored to have received such a grand performance!

Hummingbirds are one of the smallest birds known to man. Though most hummingbirds live in tropical environments, they inhabit the full length of the Americas from Alaska to the southern tip of Chile. These are high energy and long-distance migrating birds with amazing flight maneuverabilities. They also have beautiful and sometimes shimmering colorings. Hummingbirds are a joy to see and to watch, lighting up any dull moment. The local Native Americans, the Ohlone, believe it was the hummingbird that brought fire (light) to man.

The hummingbird symbolizes:

  • Endurance and Persistance
  • Energy and Vitality
  • Healing and the ability to heal using light
  • Ability to fit into small places to heal; Agility
  • Joy and Happiness
  • Peace and Love

Animal Spirits: The Wasp

paper-waspToday, as I was reviewing the recording from my last session with my own spiritual counselor/tarot reader, a very large yellow insect kept bobbing around outside the window by my desk. The session I was listening to had much to do with the root chakra and ancestral karmic healing that I’ve been working on, and insights and affirmations came in about both my physical and my spiritual lineages from ancient Celtic tribes of strong female seers and goddess-warrior women. When I was done this bright yellow messenger came closer to the window and rested on the window sill just long enough for me to see who/what it was – a queen paper wasp.

I’ve written about The Bee and The Bumblebee, both in the suborder of Apocrita like wasps, but I had to do some research on the wasp to understand its symbolism and the meaning of its message. Like other similar insects, such as bees and ants, wasps live a communal life. They are subject to the leadership of a queen, who is usually the only one who survives the winter, and hence all the wasps in her community will be her offspring. Most of her offspring are sterile female workers, or with the wasp’s sharp venomous stingers, female warriors.

The wasp community is primarily a sisterhood that involves teamwork, communication, order, production, and protection. The wasp also represents fertility, blossoming, and new beginnings since the community is born and built only in the springtime.

The Wasp symbolizes:

  • Female Power and Warrior Energy
  • Female Tribes, Sisterhoods, and Communities
  • Communal Living
  • Communication and Cooperation
  • Production and Abundance
  • New Beginnings and Growth

Water

Water Dreams

Art by Josephine Wall

I was reviewing my dream journals from the past couple of years today. Dreams can be so elusive, troubling, magical, and downright weird, but it is during these times of review, especially of dreams long forgotten – ones that I had not pondered about for days, weeks, even months as I am prone to do – that new insights and a deeper understanding of the messages of the dreams become clear like water.

One very short, yet profound dream entry from almost exactly a year ago struck me. It is one of those very rare “dreams” if you can call them that, where I physically hear a voice say something to me just as I am waking up. It was the same confident female voice that all these audible dreams have for me, and all she said was:

The hard water is done; now it will be soft.

Water symbolizes our emotions, intuition, and the subconscious and unconscious. Water is a feminine element, connected to mother, mother goddesses, as well as the Moon. In my dream journal entries leading up to this one, there had been a water theme spattered throughout. Not enough for me to call them one of my dreams series, but just an on-going theme of water in the year and a half prior to the dream message above.

My dream water theme was generally about troubled waters and needing to find (emotional) safety: swimming to safety from an on-coming ship, getting caught in a riptide but able to swim to shore, avoiding a tidal wave coming towards the house (from dry land), showering in unsafe or too public of places, and running over water safely.

call_of_the_sea

During the time frame of these water dreams occurring in my unconscious, water issues were also happening in my conscious physical life: the hot tub mysteriously lost all its water, the dishwasher piping leaked a couple of times, rain flooded in the basement, toilets several times got clogged and flooded excessively, the pond fountain kept stop working, and fish in the inside tank and in the pond were dying.

These troubled waters in my physical world and the dream world were reflective of the troubled waters I was deeply immersed in concerning healing from my mother while at the same time being the mother as her caretaker. Since dreaming: The hard water is done; now it will be soft. my life has shifted quite a bit. The role/archetype of mother/caretaker that I took on as small child has nearly dissolved, and though I still am very much a “mommy person,” it is with care taking I willingly take on, not that imposed upon me.

Neptune Pisces

Deep watery-blue Neptune

The waters in my life definitely began to settle beginning a year ago. I have not had any water themed dreams since the one above, and troubled waters in the home have all been fixed or have stopped. Neptune, the god of the waters, has and will be in his own sign of Pisces (the unconscious and dreamworld) for some time, as is Chiron, the Wounded Healer. A year ago Chiron was exactly crossing my Moon in Pisces, bringing to a head much of the healing taking place concerning my troubled waters. Coming across this dream that I had forgotten has pointed out to me that I can now safely and freely set sail across the calm seas.

Animal Spirits: The Cat

Cat Animal Spirit Wisdom

Cat of the Animal Wisdom Tarot

There has barely been an entire year’s time in my life that I have not lived with cats. As a child, my family had at least two cats and regularly had a batch of kittens climbing all over the place. As many of you know, my life has been filled with and full because of animals, and I have often felt that I would always at least need to have a cat around.

Because of the ubiquitousness of cats in my life, I am used to getting messages from them. However, in the last month or so cats have come up in conversations and encounters with others. In one conversation, the local coffee shop owner showed me a picture she had taken of a glass that seemed to have the ghostly image of a cat on it, as if watching over her from another realm. (She had only seen this image in the photograph.)

Cats seem to have a knowing and wisdom of what is hidden to us humans. Physiologically they can see very well in darkness and often seem to be looking at and watching things invisible to our eyes. I was reminded of this when I looked through one of my new Tarot decks: The Animal Wisdom Tarot. The Cat, Knower of Secrets, card is equivalent to the High Priestess, the keeper of occult knowledge, the one who sees what is hidden, what is mysterious and mystical, and what is deep within our psyches. The High Priestess and the cat are quite comfortable being active at night and in the darkness.

Bastet

The cat is also connected to goddesses, from the protective mother and war goddess Bastet of Ancient Egypt to the two cats who drove Freyja’s chariot, the Norse goddess of fertility, war, the afterlife, and sorcery, or occult knowledge. Bastet, who was also the wife of Anubis, god of embalming and the dead, is also connected to the afterlife and spirit realm.

The cat’s connection to the night and the ethereal realm also connects them to the dream world. This reminded me of one of my dream series about cats. Most of the dreams in this series occurred over the course of several years, but had ended about two years ago, before I moved back to the family home. In this dream series most of the dreams had this common theme: I was in the family home, often in the basement or garage, and cats, but mostly kittens, start to crawl out of the walls.

As usual, at the time, I was puzzled by these dreams. Now, having experienced the last few years, I understand that there was much hidden deep in my psyche (house) concerning my childhood and family that needed to be brought to the surface (basement/garage) to be healed and freed (kittens coming out of walls).

photo-1

My kitty, Zoe, the wise Shri Swami Sattvapurrrrrananda (click pic for her yoga book!)

A couple months ago, however, I had a new cat dream: I was downstairs coming out of what was the old bathroom and saw a small kitten under the couch/table. My dogs were there too. I went to get the kitten (tiger-striped) and then saw another. It went under my sister’s (old) bedroom door. I went in knowing she did not live here anymore. Inside was a Siamese mother cat and at least a dozen baby kittens. She was hungry because she was stuck in the room. I planned to set up water and food for her and the babies and wondered if there was a birthing mess. I took mama cat upstairs to the office to tell my mom, dad, and brother. My dogs came too.

And as usual so many layers of meaning for me with this dream! Here are just a few: A little more cleaning up of the deep psyche (downstairs/basement of house), but much birthing, freshness, freedom (kittens) and a need for good self-nurturing. There is also a message of being able to fully present my Self (as mama cat and kittens) to my family.

The Cat symbolizes:

  • Independence and Freedom
  • Protection and Watchfulness
  • Nurturing, Mothering, and Love
  • Intuition, Mystery, and Seeing the Unseen/Hidden
  • Occult Knowledge, Secrets, and Wisdom
  • The Spirit Realm and Afterlife

Remembering Our Oneness

Julianne Victoria's avatarBlazing Light of Glory

lao-tzu-harmonious-onenessAs I’ve reviewed my notes, circles, and underlinings in The Course from these last few weeks, I have recollected how the theme of remembering is being woven through the lessons. Regular reminders always help concepts, ideas, etc. to sink into our minds, and The Course is doing just that to help us to remember our oneness with God, with our brothers, and with All.

It is in this remembering our oneness that Love is free to flow within, throughout, and interconnecting our lives. Forgiveness and Gratitude become easy as the fears of the ego-mind and of the body-mind ease as we remember that we are not separate from God, ever. We are always safe, secure, and truly in Love.

Lesson 243: Father…We are one because each part contains Your memory, and truth must shine in all of us as one.

The word remember means: to bring to mind again; to…

The Winds of Change: Turning Restlessness Into Growth & Transformation

wind_of_change

Wind of Change by Josephine Wall

We all experience times in our lives when we feel impatient and restless. I don’t necessarily mean that “cabin fever” type of restlessness, where our physical bodies have been stationary for too long and need to get moving, though it can manifest that way. What I am talking about is something internal: feeling antsy for unclear reasons, thinking constantly that something has to change, sensing an urge to move or change something in our external environments, or just feeling impatient, restless, even irritable without understanding why. This restlessness can be uncomfortable and cause us to act rashly or harshly towards others. However, if we embrace this internal churning, we can harness its energy to bring about the change in our lives that it is trying bring about.

During this month of March 2015 we will have the last of seven exact Uranus-Pluto squares. Pluto brings in transformation, and airy Uranus brings in potential restlessness. To add to the building up of energy, Mars is conjoining Uranus in his own sign of Aries. Sparks could fly, suddenly and unexpectedly, but we can do our best to embrace and channel all this energy into growth and transformation, rather than into rebellion and conflict.

Internal restlessness can be seen as our souls, our higher selves, Spirit, or God stirring movement and change deep within us to allow us to grow and bring positive change into our lives and external world. To embrace it, we can start by acknowledging and accepting the potential for growth and change. Sometimes just a change in perspective can shift things dramatically. Artistic outlets and meditation practices can help calm the mind. Of course, it can be very challenging to sit still in mediation or prayer when we are feeling so restless, so a form of moving meditation, such as a yoga asana and pranayama practice, walking a labyrinth, or even a challenging workout where the mind has to be focused can help us focus this windy energy into a productive and transformative force in our lives.

vision_seeker

Accepting and embracing change within ourselves leads us to a sense of inner peace and puts us in a better place to handle change. These are times of much movement and change, universally, astrologically, and spiritually. Let us all try to harness these winds of change to calm the stormy seas and navigate ourselves smoothly through change, growth, and transformation.

Three Ways to Bring Balance, Harmony, & Healing to the Chakras

Chakra healingChakra comes from the Sanskrit word, चक्रम् cakram,     which means wheel. The chakras are energy centers or wheels where energy, also known as prana, chi, or qi, rotates and flows. Anatomically, the chakras correspond to the locations of major plexuses of the nervous and circulatory systems. Here I will introduce three ways to bring balance, harmony, and healing to the chakras.

I) Chakra Vibration Meditation Practice

Though some of you may recognize this from chanting mantra in your yoga practice, here is a chakra vibration meditation practice for the seven main chakras that run from the base of the spine up to the top of the head.

You can do this chakra vibration meditation practice seated comfortably in a chair, sitting in meditation, or lying in Shavasana (corpse pose). Sit or lie quietly for a few minutes before beginning. When ready, chant the following vibrational sounds, or mantras, for each of the seven chakras. You may choose to chant each mantra once, or a certain number of times (3, 9, 27, 54, 108… ). You could also do a continuous chant, cycling through all the chakras from bottom to top repeatedly. Doing this chakra vibration meditation practice can help clear out any stagnant energy in your chakra centers, revitalize weak chakras, and bring your energy into balance and harmony. If you feel a certain chakra or corresponding area of your body needs healing, you could also focus on the mantra for that particular chakra.

1) Muladhara – Root Chakra: Lam लं (pronounced: lum)

2) Svadhisthana – Naval/Sacral Chakra: Vam वं (pr: vum)

3) Manipura – Solar Plexus: Ram रं (pr: rum)

4) Anahata – Heart Chakra: Yam यं (pr: yum)

5) Vishuddha – Throat Chakra: Ham हं (pr: hum)

6) Ajna – Third Eye Chakra: Om ओं

7) Sahasrara – Crown Chakra: Aum औं

II) Chakra Gemstone Meditation Practice

Another way to promote the flow of prana (chi, qi, energy) and bring the energy flow into balance and harmony is with the use of gemstones. In a chakra gemstone meditation practice you can use a gemstone for each chakra, or focus on a specific one that needs attention or healing. Gemstones can purify/cleanse, promote healing, harmonize imbalanced prana, and facilitate the flow of energy through all the chakras.

A chakra gemstone meditation practice is best done lying down since you will need to place the gemstone(s) on the chakra(s). Make sure you are comfortable and warm, whether you are lying in shavasana on your yoga mat or on your bed. With the gemstone(s) on the chakra(s) rest in meditation: Shamatha calming the mind meditiaion, Vipassana mindfulness breathing, or a visualization practice on the chakra(s). You could also chant the chakra vibration meditation practice discussed above.

As a general rule, a gemstone that is the same color as a chakra will be a good one to use for that given chakra. Here is a short list of specific stones that are beneficial for each chakra:

1) Muladhara – Root Chakra: Ruby, Bloodstone, Garnet, Smoky Quartz

2) Svadhisthana – Naval/Sacral Chakra: Amber, Coral, Carnelian, Citrine

3) Manipura – Solar Plexus: Gold, Tiger Eye, Yellow Amber, Gold Topaz

4) Anahata – Heart Chakra: Rose Quartz, Emerald, Pink or Green Tourmaline, Malachite, Jade

5) Vishuddha – Throat Chakra: Turquoise, Lapis Lazuli, Aquamarine, Blue Topaz

6) Ajna – Third Eye Chakra: Quartz Crystal, Sapphire, Lapis Lazuli, Azurite

7) Sahasrara – Crown Chakra: Quartz Chrystal, Diamond, Amethyst, Selenite

III) Chakra Balancing and Healing With Nutrition

We can also do chakra balancing and healing with nutrition. We can bring our prana (chi, qi, energy) into balance and harmony, and promote healing for the chakras and their corresponding areas of the body and mind with the aide of foods. Whole, fresh, and organic foods can be potent medicines and healing tools.

To bring into balance and to encourage healing for each of the seven main chakras, incorporate some or more of the following foods for a specific chakra, or improve overall health by eating better for all the chakras. As with gemstones, a general rule is that foods that are the same color of a chakra are beneficial for that given chakra. Here are a few suggestions:

1) Muladhara – Root Chakra: Non-meat proteins: kidney and aduki beans, legumes, nuts; red fruits and berries, beets.

2) Svadhisthana – Naval/Sacral Chakra: Liquids/fluids, oranges, carrots, pumpkin.

3) Manipura – Solar Plexus: Whole grains: oats, barley, quinoa, wheat; bananas, lemons, sunburst squash.

4) Anahata – Heart Chakra: All green and leafy vegetables, kiwi, spirulina, zucchini.

5) Vishuddha – Throat Chakra: Blue and purple berries: blueberries, blackberries, lingonberries.

6) Ajna – Third Eye Chakra: Any purple or violet fruits and veggies: purple cabbage, broccoli, potatoes, asparagus, eggplant.

7) Sahasrara – Crown Chakra: This chakra is usually associated with water and fasting.

The Meaning of the Dawning of the Age of Aquarius

Age of Aquarius - StarMost of us have heard the phrase, the Age of Aquarius, or at least we’ve heard the famous song about its dawning. What is the Age of Aquarius? What will the Age of Aquarius bring? Here I will explain, from a Western Astrology view and without getting too technical, the astronomical and astrological meaning of the dawning of the Age of Aquarius.

The Astronomy of Astrological Ages

During what is called the Great Year or the Precession of the Equinoxes, our sun journeys across the backdrop of the stars in the sky, completing its precession of the equinoxes through all of the twelve zodiac constellations in about 25,772 years. In a precession the stars are observed moving in a retrograde or backwards motion, and their positions in the sky shift approximately 1 degree every 72 years. The equinox sun’s precession through each of the zodiac signs is called a Great Month, and lasts about 2,150 years. That is to say, about every 2,150 years we begin a new age. Though there are various calculations and views on when the Age of Aquarius begins the consensus is that the Age of Aquarius will begin about 2600 CE. Currently the sun at the Vernal Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere is in Pisces. Given the retrograde motion, we are entering into the last quarter of the Age of Pisces, or the dawning of the Age of Aquarius.

The Astrological Meaning of the Ages of Pisces and Aquarius

Before we jump into the Age of Aquarius, let’s first understand the age that we are still in, the Age of Pisces. Pisces represents intuition, sensitivity, and compassion. It also represents dreaminess, delusion, illusion, and elusiveness. Neptune rules the sign of Pisces and opens the doors to transcendental and mystical experience, but we can also easily get lost in deception and pseudo-realities. Our personal choices will lead us down one path or the other. This is the age of the “New Age”, an increase in spirituality, self-awareness, personal growth, and soul searching.

As we are entering into the last part of the Age of Pisces, we are already beginning to sense the influences of the coming age, hence the dawning of the Age of Aquarius. Aquarius represents humanitarian efforts, clearer communication, and expansiveness. There’s also stubbornness and rebelliousness. Uranus rules Aquarius and can bring about sudden changes from lightning insights and epiphanies to unexpected revolts and revolutions. Across the globe we can already see the dawning as political changes and humanitarian and human equality efforts seem to be increasing and expanding. The Age of Aquarius will hopefully bring us into an age of world peace, where we all love and respect one another without prejudice and fear.
