Aum (Om): The Song of the Cosmos and Celestial Harmony

Aum (Om) isn’t just a chant that yoga instructors use to open                                             and close a yogakeplersolarsystem class. It is the “sound” of the divine energy that reverberates throughout the cosmos. It is the universal prana, the vital energy or breath of life, much like the sun is the earth’s source of life giving energy. Interestingly, scientists have discovered that ripples on the surface of the sun are vibrations of energy – sound waves! Yes, the sun, and likely all the billions and billions of other stars out there, are singing their songs out into the universe. This vibrational hum of the stars cannot be heard by our human ears, but its vibrational energy can be felt when we are in deep meditation or in a meditative state of awareness of the oneness of all.

The three sounds of A-U-M also reflect the three main aspects of our personal astrology, our Ascendant, Moon, and Sun signs, respectively. As explained in The Prashna Upanishad:

AUM has three sounds. Those who meditate on a come back to earth, led by the Rig Veda, to lead a pure life, full of faith and love. Those who meditate on the first two sounds, a and u, led by the Yajur Veda, go into the lunar world, full of pleasure, from which they come back cloyed to the earth again. But those who meditate on a, u, and m are led by the Sama chants to the sun, where freed from sin, as a snake sheds its skin, they see the supreme Lord, who lives in all.

With the help of Pythagoras’ mathematical discovery of the ratios of musical harmony, Johannes Kepler discovered that the elliptical movements and velocities of the planets in our solar system correspond to harmonic ratios and to the musical intervals of a complete scale. The music of these spheres, along with the song of the sun, create the celestial harmony. Our solar system and the whole universe is alive with prana, vibrational energy, strings, the Higgs Boson particle, or whatever manifestation of God resonates with each of us, from which all is created. Whatever that vibration may be, Om, Aum, Amen, Shalom…let’s all together sing the song of the cosmos!

Sounds of the Sun…

Sounds of the planets in our solar system…

The Only Constant is Change – Heraclitus

Many of us fear change. Change is scary                                                                               because the outcome is usually monarchlifecycleunknown. We try to keep things the same – our appearances, thinking, behaviors, activities, etc. – so we don’t have to feel any fear or anxiety stepping into the unknown. As hard as we may try to keep things the same, nothing is permanant. Everything is changing and shifting from the particles and anti-particles at the quantum level to the supernovae and black holes at the universal level.

Living structures…can exist only if they change. Change and growth are inherent qualities of the life process. – Erich Fromm

Living, healing, and growing require change. Change and the future are unknown, but when we face our fears wonderful opportunities can appear. Trying to keep things the same when they want to or need to change, will only hinder us and slow our growth physically, emotionally, and spiritually. However good or bad a situation, it will change, so let us all work towards setting aside our anxiety about the future, accepting change when it comes, and choosing change when it’s necessary.

Om Namah Shivaya: Mantras to Shiva

On this eve of the new moon that welcomes in                                                                         the new beginnings of Spring, HinduShivaNataraja devotees and yogis and yoginis celebrate the Maha Shivaratri, the great night of Lord Shiva. Often depicted as the Nataraja, the Lord of Dance, Shiva performs the cosmic dance of the Universe in a rhythmic cycle of creation, maintenance, and destruction. Though Shiva is often thought of as the god of destruction, he really represents change and transformation. When one thing ends/is destroyed, the way is opened for something new to come, a new beginning. Shiva means Auspicious One, and it seems fitting that his celebration ushers in the new life and new beginnings of Spring.

Shiva is also the Great Yogi, whose guidance can help us burn away the ignorance and desire of the ego with Tapas (austerity). Through Tapas and all yogic practices we can strive to liberate ourselves from the ego and enter into the new awakened state of Samadhi, becoming One with the divine vibrations of All.

Besides worship and fasting, Maha Shivaratri is a night filled with the chanting of mantra for self-realization. Om Namah Shivaya is often sung 108 times, a number that represents the Oneness (1), the Emptiness (0), and the Infinity (8) of the Universe. Two other mantras to Lord Shiva are the Shiva Sahasranama, the thousand names of Shiva, and the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra.

The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is a beautiful and powerful meditation mantra. With the epithet “three-eyed one”, this mantra addresses the god Rudra, the fierce and destructive aspect of Shiva. The transformative vibrations of this mantra can assist us in overcoming illness, mental and physical, and promote rejuvenation, healing, and longevity. But, more importantly, this mantra is sung to conquer death and bring us immortality – not immortality of the physical body, but of the soul, the Self. It invokes Rudra, the destroyer of the ego, to strengthen (nourish) us through the process of transformation towards greater awareness. The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is a prayer for moksha, spiritual liberation.

Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra:

Om tryambakam yajaamahe

sughandim pushti vardhanam

urvaarukamive bhandhanaan

mrityor mokshiya maamritaat

We meditate on (worship) the three-eyed one (Rudra/Shiva)

who is fragrant and nourishes all beings

bound by overpowering disease

may he liberate us from death with immortality (amrita, the immortal nectar)

र्तक आत्मा । Nartaka Aatmaa

Such a one who has realized his essential spiritual nature is a Self that is only a dancer on the world stage.

Quantum Yoga & Samadhi: Our Interconnectedness

TrueSelfThe ultimate goal of a yoga practice and the eighth limb of the eight limbs of yoga is Samadhi, which is often described as a complete meditative state of oneness. But what does this mean? It is often thought of as a state of a thought-free mind connected with the body, but this would make it a goal of the separate individual. On the contrary, the oneness of Samadhi is an awareness of the oneness and interconnectedness with All: the divine, the universe, the mundane, and all sentient beings. The complete meditative state is not a form of escapism for the individual, but a cessation of letting the chatter and worry of the ego-mind cloud the awareness of our interconnectedness. A meditative state is a state of complete awareness of the oneness of All.

In an interview with Time magazine, astrophysicist Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson was asked: What is the most astounding fact you can share with us about the universe?

He answered: We are part of this universe; we are in this universe, but perhaps more important than both of those facts, is that the universe is in us.

Everyone and everything on this planet and throughout the universe is made of all the same atoms, particles, quarks, strings, etc. We are all interconnected from the most subtle to the most concrete levels of energy, existence, and being. Let’s all make an effort each day to broaden our awareness of our interconnectedness, and hence our compassion, for we are all part of the whole and the whole is all of us.

What Is Forgiveness?

Julianne Victoria's avatarBlazing Light of Glory

TwainSince completing the last review section, lessons 201-220, The Course has taken a change of course in how it presents the lessons. They are now broken down into sections of ten lessons with a topic in the form of a question that is covered in the ten lessons. The lessons themselves have become shorter again with one paragraph as a prayer to the Father (God) and one paragraph as the channeled message from Jesus to the authors of The Course.

The first section with this new format is titled: What Is Forgiveness? And in the introduction it states beautifully:

Forgiveness, on the other hand is still, and quietly does nothing. It offends no aspect of reality, nor seeks to twist it to appearances it likes. It merely looks, and waits, and judges not.

Forgiveness seems so hard for so many. Maybe it is because it is thought of…

Animal Spirits: The Skunk

skunk2On one of my (pre-) dawn walks with my pups last weekend, I saw what at first I thought was a small black dog walking down a street. I did not see a human and was concerned it might have gotten out or lost. I waited and watched it walk closer to me only to realize that it was actually a skunk. This was my first sighting (or hearing of) a skunk in the city (or even the Bay Area), and so I was quite surprised as well as curious about what messages this animal spirit might be bringing to me.

Despite most people’s fear, skunks are peace loving creatures. They will only spray their skunky stink if they absolutely have to because it can take several days to refill their glands, and so they would prefer to settle matters peacefully. They are natural practitioners of Ahimsa, non-violence. Skunks can also be domesticated and kept as pets, showing their ability to co-operate with other creatures.

Skunks are crepuscular, meaning they are most active at dawn and dusk. They confidently move about during the dark twilight hours, when the energy is shifting from day to night and night to day.

The Skunk symbolizes:

  • Peace, Patience, and Non-violence
  • Self-confidence, Courage, and Self-respect
  • Awareness of and Understanding Energy
  • Prudence

Embracing, Healing, & Releasing Ancestral Karma

DNAAs I work on two of my books-in-progress, both of which have much to do with the psyche, psychology, the unconscious realm, and healing in those areas, I’ve realized that much of what I am really writing about is ancestral karma. One book is about my own healing journey, tentatively called The Journey of a Wounded Healer, and the other is about my sister and her mental illness, called In My Sister’s Mind, The Ups, Downs, and All-Arounds Within the Mind of a Schizophrenic. Because of and through my work on these two books, much to my surprise, I have assisted my own journey by embracing, healing, and releasing ancestral karma.

As those of you who followed along with my blog entries to my Butterfly Journal last year know, I made a huge life change by closing up my successful healing practice, selling my home that I had completely transformed, and leaving behind my little farm of veggies, herbs, berries, and chickens, to move back to my hometown San Francisco. Consciously I did that because I could no longer take the constant cold and lack of sunshine. I was also conscious of what moving back into my family home of four generations meant and what I would potentially be getting myself into.

Though consciously I hoped for different, psychically I knew that I was entering into what would be a very difficult and major healing and transformation phase, and that it was necessary for my growth. I knowingly completely tore down one fully free, creative, independent, and self-sustaining life, and keeping only the bare essentials willingly entered into into a life of nearly complete dependancy and stagnancy. As much as I was dreading it, I also knew in the depths of my psyche and by listening to the messages from Spirit, that this had to be done, and that if I did not choose to enter this transformation, the Universe would do it for me.

AncestorsFittingly this two-year slow and limiting cycle of healing and growth all occurred within the time frame that Saturn, the slow and limiting planet of transformation, was transiting my fourth house of home, family, the tribe, ancestors, and past life karma. As the past two years progressed and as I understood more and more why I was called back to home, I could feel deep healing occurring both within myself on all levels and within the walls of the home itself.

On my mother’s side, there are four generations who have lived in this house, five generations in San Francisco, and at least seven generations in California. They came partly because of famine in Ireland, and partly for the Gold Rush. On my father’s side, his parents were immigrants. Both sides have their tragedies and traumas, their adventures, their mysteries, their triumphs, and their secrets. There are ancestors who fled from crime, unexplained deaths, multiple lost babies, hidden teenage pregnancies, destructive fires, and women widowed much too young with several children. Missing pages of pictures in old photo albums add more to the mysteries, as well as hyperbolic stories of royal ancestry.

Looking back over the past 2.5 years I understand and see the whole process much better. As I slowly began to embrace my role and my journey, I was able to fully answer the soul call of my ancestors, to assist healing to take place now in the present to release the past and clear the way for future generations. Even the house itself, which used to be filled with entities and energies (I grew up aware that it was a haunted house), feels lighter and brighter. Much has been freed to fly toward the light.

The hallways here are covered with ancestors’ photos. I can only ponder all that went on in their lives, but many stories have passed on through the generations. Here are a few:

FullSizeRender-7

My grandfather on the left. (Only 5 of the 10 children survived birth/childhood.) He left home at 14 under sketchy circumstances and sailed around the globe for a few years. He only saw some family again when he went back once when he was about 80 years old.

FullSizeRender-6

This great-grandfather passed not long after this photo. My great-grandmother then took her five daughters (also only 5 of 10 children survived birth/childhood) and mother and moved to a completely unknown place far away (from Scotland to Vancouver) to flee from impending war in Europe.

FullSizeRender-9

My maternal great-grandfather (on left) was a Bohemian artist and often travelled with Jack London (in this photo – I think #3). He passed when my grandmother was still a toddler.

FullSizeRender-4

My great-great grandfather fighting the fire of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. He eventually passed due to smoke inhalation from this fire.

FullSizeRender-5

My great-great grandmother widowed by the fire-fighter above. Her daughter was widowed by the Bohemian great-grandfather (2 photos above), and she had two daughters including my grandmother. Another band of strong Celtic ancestry women who had to make it through the Great Depression together.

Ancestral karma and wounds can be passed down for generations genetically, epigenetically, emotionally, and psychically. Though it is helpful to know or discover the history of what these may be, it is not always possible. Communicating with ancestors has come up in the last few astrology readings I have done, and two ways that I suggest to connect to ancestors is 1) talk or pray to those you have known, such as parents, grandparents, etc. and see what messages or signs come, and 2) ask them to come in your dreams, since this is our access to the unconscious and the easiest access we have to the spirit realm. Another way to spot if you have ancestral karma that needs healing is to see if there are patterns of abuse and addictions in your family. This may have started with some sort of family trauma or tragedy generations ago or just with your own parents (they are ancestors too), but by acknowledging and embracing it and through forgiveness and gratitude, you allow it/yourself to heal and release.

The greatest medicine for healing is love. And it is through forgiveness and gratitude that we allow ourselves to love. Though it may be hard to forgive an abusive parent or other ancestor, by releasing yourself of any anger and by finding compassion for their pain and suffering, forgiveness will come. Forgiveness does not justify an action. It’s not about whether someone’s actions were right or wrong, but about our willingness to let go. This opens the way for healing. Also, there is always something we can learn about ourselves from every experience, and for at least that we can find gratitude. Healing old wounds from this life or from family lines takes time, but it will come.

Footnote: As I began working on this post this morning, my brother, the family genealogist, walks in and hands me a box – an ancestry genetics test! Ah, synchronicity!

Still…

My post below synchronistically goes along with the stillness that came up in this week’s oracle card reading…

Julianne Victoria's avatarBlazing Light of Glory

stillnessLisa and I are in the middle of Review VI in the Course, which consists of lessons 201-220. At the beginning and end of each of these 20 short review lessons is the mantra:

I am not a body. I am free.

For I am still as God created me.

As I’d read the lessons, I found I preferred to read this mantra out loud each time, just as I would sing other mantras that are part of my everyday life and spiritual practice, and in doing so I felt calm, peaceful, and eternal. In other words, still.

I am not a body. I am free.

For I am still as God created me.

854723-bigthumbnailIn my post On Life, Death, & Original Sin, I discussed how we (our True Self, our souls) are not the physical body. It is our souls, unbound by attachment to the body…

Animal Spirits: The Eagle

eagleThe eagle has been coming up a lot for me lately when I pull my daily Earth Magic Oracle Card. I’ve also recently become captivated by a powerful Saami song by Mari Boine called Eagle Brother. (A video of it is at end of this post.) The Saami are the native people and reindeer herders from the Arctic regions of Scandinavia and Western Russia. Though they are sometimes called People of the Bear (the Greek word ἄρκτος, arktos, means “bear”), they have a Shamanic culture and are intimately connected to nature spirits and animal spirits in general, including the powerful eagle.

Eagles are very large birds, having wingspans up to 8 feet long. They are keen sighted, swift, opportunistic, and smart. They hunt with skill and determination, and have a commanding and authoritative presence. The powerful beating of their massive and strong wings is thought by many native cultures to bring cleaning, healing, and revitalizing rains. Interestingly I have been having many dreams lately with themes of water, cleansing, and purging.

eagleyesThe eagle’s sharp vision is deeply symbolic of it’s insight, intuition, wisdom, knowledge of magic and spiritual truths, even divination. Its ability to soar high allows the eagle to see above the physical realm as well as see the bigger picture from the perspective of Spirit. Like most birds, the eagle is also a messenger of Spirit and a guide of souls (psychopomp) from the earthly to the spirit realm.

The Eagle represents:

  • Strength, Power, Authority, and Skill
  • Keen Vision, Insight, and Focus
  • Seeing the Universal Picture
  • Wisdom and Spiritual Knowledge
  • Cleansing and Healing
  • Guides for Souls and Messengers of Spirit
